4 Lean Bloggers at the CONNSTEP Conference

by Jamie Flinchbaugh on 11-15-10

Last Thursday I was delivering a keynote titled Changing Behaviors Through Daily Actions for CONNSTEP’s annual conference in Hartford, CT.

It was a nice opportunity for 4 lean bloggers to meet and chat, and of course present. Here are the 4 of us. Yup, I’m feeling a bit short.

From left it is Tim McMahon, Mark Graban, myself, and Tom Southworth.

I met Tim McMahon for the first time. Tim is also a fraternity brother of mine from different schools. He blogs at A Lean Journey. Tim spoke on lean in product development. You can find him on Twitter at TimALeanJourney.

Mark Graban I have known for a long time. We both attended MIT in overlapping years and you might call him the original lean blogger, which you can check out at LeanBlog.org. Mark spoke at the conference on lean in hospitals. You can find him on Twitter at LeanBlog.

Tom Southworth I was meeting for the first time as well. Tom went to Lehigh University as did I, although different years. Tom is with the CONNSTEP organization and blogs at TomSouthworth.com. Tom led a panel discussion on TWI, or Training Within Industry. You can find him on Twitter at TomSouthworth.

I hope you have the opportunity to meet such great people at conferences that you attend. And I hope you follow some of my recommendations on getting the most out of your conference experience.

If you have a conference that you would like me to speak for in 2011, please contact me.

  • Thanks, Jamie. It was great seeing you and meeting Tim and Tom for the first time. I was glad I could see you present in a conference setting, finally.

As for “lean blog” history, I’m pretty certain Evolving Excellence pre-dates my blog and I think Mike Wroblewski started started in 2003 (!!!). I started in Feb 2005, which is pretty early, though…

  • My bad Mark. That’s why I said “might” – but you still helped create the atmosphere for lean blogging.

  • I wish I could have been there to make it 5 bloggers. I stared my blog in Sept 2005 after Mark’s. I think Joe Ely’s blog Learning about Lean is one of the first started back in Sept 2002.
