Does Your Lean Culture Measure Up? [Lessons From The Road]

by Jamie Flinchbaugh on 01-24-19

How do you know when you’ve shaped your lean culture effectively?  You create a mechanism to measure the results. In my most recent “Lessons from the Road” article written for Industry Week, I share the five essential mechanisms that will help you establish a management system to measure and improve your culture.

The five essentials are as follow:

  • Articulate your target culture
  • Have a behavior change plan
  • Observe behaviors
  • Conduct an organizational assessment
  • Use a survey assessment

Once you have an understanding of whether your culture is working, then you can adjust your plan to accomplish your goals.

  • Jamie, thanks for the info. As an 21 y/o intern, I helped remodel the inventory storeroom of a hospital using lean principles. By far the toughest challenge I faced was dealing with floor associates, most of which had been working there for 10+ years. Suddenly some kid was going to come in and change everything around? I wish I had used some of your tips; understanding the effect of culture would have helped the process go a little more smoothly..
