How Should We Really Compare a Stoplight to Performance Management?

by Jamie Flinchbaugh on 10-27-26

What does “yellow” actually mean on your performance scorecard?

For most teams it’s a gray zone, where the response depends on workload, mood, and who’s paying attention, and that ambiguity drives inconsistent behavior. In this video I explain why you should either give yellow a precise definition or remove it, and why a fourth color, blue (“still red, but we have a plan”), keeps leaders from piling new reactions onto a fix that needs time to work.

I also cover the difference between a metric and an indicator, and why a number like andon pulls should make you curious rather than make you judge.
